Passion

What is it that you are passionate about?

Everyone has something that they have a passion for.  For many it is a sports team, and they never miss a game and scream at the top of their lungs while rooting for their team.  For some it’s cars, and they wash them every weekend and treat them like a parent treats a child.

Whatever it is that you’re passionate about, if you place that “thing” above/before God you have in fact made that thing an idol.  We are warned in scripture about idols.

Psalm 135:15-17 – The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths.

Colossians 3:5 – Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Leviticus 26:1 – “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God.”

God wants to be that foremost “thing” in our lives.  That thing that we wake up and go to sleep thinking about.  God is jealous of anything else taking that primary position in our lives.

Exodus 34:14 – for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God

In fact, God is so jealous He wants first place even before our family.  He showed this with Abraham in testing him with Isaac.

Genesis 22:1-2 – Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”  And he said, “Here I am.”  Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

God never wanted Isaac to be harmed but He desired to see just how much Abraham loved Him.

Genesis 22:9-12 – They came to the place of which God had told him … And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.”  And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Are we living out our faith like this? I confess that there are times when I put other things and people before God.  When I wake up a little under the weather, and decide to rest rather than attend church.  I am making my body an idol.  Or if I pass on reading the Bible because there’s a good show on television.  That show is now an idol.

God doesn’t want us to eliminate all other things from our lives, He only asks us to put Him before those other things.  And when we do those things, do them in such a way that we glorify our Father in heaven.

Colossians 3:23 – Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

1 Corinthians 10:31 – So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

If we truly love the Lord who was beaten and went to a cross in our place, that should be an easy thing to do.
