For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. – Matthew 10:35-37

One of my all-time favorite fictional characters is Columbo.  This character, played so wonderfully by Peter Falk, was a Los Angeles homicide detective, who cunningly outsmarted every killer by getting into their heads to cause them to unravel. Many of these “Columbo” episodes revolved around one family member who turned against another and commits murder.

Jesus, in the Gospel of Matthew 10:35-37, warns about family members becoming enemies and He Himself setting family members against one another.  However, He is certainly not referring to anything that would end up as a plot line in a “Columbo” episode.  What He does mean, is that when we choose to walk with Jesus and put Him first in our life, those closest to us will often attack that choice.  They will attack our new lifestyle and our desire to not do the sinful things we did before.

What this inter-family attack does, is prompt us to make another decision. Do we go back to that old lifestyle, or continue to walk with Jesus at the risk of severing earthly relationships?

“And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” Matthew 19:29

God asks us to dedicate our life to Him, regardless of the cost.  The promised reward is eternity in Heaven and blessings beyond our wildest dreams.

Nevertheless, we should never stop trying to win those family members, friends and neighbors over to Christ, while there is time.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 5:16
