What Does Free in Christ Truly Mean?

Christians are always saying that they have found freedom in Christ.  Or that the Lord has set them free.  But do we really consider what that freedom means?

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior what happens to us.  Does He set us free so that we no longer sin?  Does he set us free from temptation?  Does Jesus free us from the attacks of the evil one telling us we’re not worthy of grace?  Or is it that He has set us free from the bondage of sin and death?

We are not free from the ability to sin. In fact, it is almost guaranteed that we will sin.

Even the great Apostle Paul struggled with sin.  Romans 7:15 … For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

However, if we are truly changed we will no longer be comfortable with sin.   Romans 6:12 … Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.

We are certainly not free from temptation. Even Jesus was not free from temptation, so why would we be free.

Matthew 4:1-11 … Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

The evil one will continue his attacks, although God only allows him to tempt us to a point.

1 Corinthians 10:13 … No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Bondage is an interesting one. Jesus broke the bonds of sin and death on our behalf, but we must walk in Him to be free.  Just like a prisoner whose cell has been opened, they choose whether to walk through the door into freedom or stay in captivity.

Romans 8:9 … You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

John 8:36 … So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Romans 8:2 … For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

So lean on the Lord every day and fight the good fight against temptation.  It is not easy, and we will fall from time to time, but with Jesus living within us we can be victorious!
